Movie: Dark City

Mystery, Sci-Fi | Alex Proyas | Australia, USA | 1998 | IMDB

A man struggles with memories of his past, including a wife he cannot remember, in a nightmarish world with no sun and run by beings with telekinetic powers who seek the souls of humans.

I say rather dark and depressing, visually appealing, the original story.

Furthermore, spoilers! The story is original, and I did enjoy the movie, yet, I found it to be a bit irritating. With beings who posses such a great power, one would expect more elegant way to execute their experiment, than physically modifying the city.

I cannot say that the movie is very thought provoking or complex, neither is there much of parallels with reality.

The end, which above all is visually liberating, raise an important question: John have now the absolute power, what does that mean for the inhibitors of the city? Is John on such high level of consciousness that he won’t, in time, abuse the power given to him? Nothing indicate that he’s different than any other person; in the very end, for example, he meet his wife again and agree to accompany her. There’s definitely a hint of romance, and where is desire, there’s potential of jealousy, anger and destruction.
