Samba: Guest Access

Samba configuration is in the file /etc/samba/smb.conf.

To enable guest account modify/add following options:

guest account = nobody
map to guest = Bad User

Add shares:

    path = /var/shares/my-share
    writable = no
    read only = yes
    public = yes

Check the access to files you’re sharing. Change to nobody and see if you can cd into the shared folder and whether you can, if that’s your aim, modify containing files.

$ sudo -u nobody bash
$ cd /var/shares/my/share
$ touch test

If you’re sharing files from user’s home folder, make sure that user nobody has read access to it:

$ chmod 755 /home/some_user

Attention! The above command will allow everyone to read files in user’s home folder. For this reason it’s better to create special account just for shared files, or put files you want to share, outside users’ homes.
